CREATING ECONOMIC GROWTH IN AFRICA

  

The conference in Kampala was hosted by four members of the Africa Commission: Dr. Greg Mills, Director of the Brenthurst Foundation, Mr. Koen Vervaeke, Head of the European Commission Delegation to the African union; Ms. Betty Maina, Executive Director of the Kenya Association of Manufacturers and Mr. Klaus Bustrup, Chairman of the Danish Board for International Development Cooperation.

The objective of the conference was to secure a string of recommendations that will be used in the further work of the Africa Commission, and to ensure African and civil society ownership to the process.

A broad range of participants

The more than 80 participants in Kampala represented a broad range of actors from government institutions, civil society, and the private sector, and they have been carefully picked to create an in-depth and multidimensional approach to understanding the challenge of economic growth in Africa.

Following the format of the already concluded conferences, the one-day conference in Kampala was divided into plenary sessions and smaller working groups, in which the participants discussed sub-themes connected to the main theme of economic growth.

The following themes guided to the working group discussions:

1. Engaging the poor in the growth process
2. Growth enabling environment - Infrastructure
3. Institutions and growth
4. Growth enabling environment - Financial sector
5. Generating growth in African agriculture

Documents for the Kampala conference

The interventions from the plenary sessions and the recommendations from the various working groups were consolidated into a conference paper, which was widely distributed after the conference and can be found on this website.
