YOUTH CONSULTATIONS
In order to strengthen its work and recommendations, the Africa Commission has given a voice to Africa’s young women and men so they can positively influence policies and strategies that affect their lives.
The energy and talent of the continent’s young women and men could be a force for positive change, if harnessed wisely. Africa’s countries face a considerable challenge in transforming the potential of youth into growth and development.
Today, young Africans have far fewer opportunities, in terms of political influence and access to resources such as land and finance, than adults. In most places young women have fewest opportunities. Poor living conditions, lack of basic services and decent jobs, and widely different levels of income could lead to social destabilisation, especially in urban areas, where the majority of Africans will live in the future.
Platforms for youth participation
The Africa Commission supported the creation of an Africa Youth Panel, from where young people from all over Africa have provided input to the Commission's members.
The Commission also organised a special workshop about future challenges in Africa as part of the Copenhagen Consensus Youth Forum in April 2008.
Also, on Facebook, young African's have been debating the Commission's five initiatives.
The young voices have been heard. The final report of the Commission has a clear youth focus, and several initiatives are directly aimed at helping young people achieve their objectives.
